Rambo: First Blood
Tuesday 07 August - 22:30 (2012)
When a small town police chief arrests a vagrant hitchhiker, for no apparent reason, little does he realise that he has set in motion a catastrophic series of events. Get ready for a showdown!
The vagrant in question is John J. Rambo (Sylvester Stallone), a decorated Vietnam war veteran, skilled in jungle survival, weaponry, and guerrilla warfare. Responding to the harassment of his jailers with sudden ferociousness, he makes a daring escape, and goes on a rampage in the nearby mountains. As the manhunt begins, Rambo is in his element, a one-man army laying siege to the police station. As the situation spirals out of control, Rambo's commanding officer, Colonel Samuel Trautman (Richard Crenna, after Kirk Douglas dropped out) is called to the rescue.
The film is based on the David Morrell´s bestseller "First Blood". The movie rights were snapped up shortly after the book's release, but the project remained in Hollywood limbo. Long before Stallone was hired to play Rambo, other actors such as Clint Eastwood, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Steve McQueen, Nick Nolte, John Travolta, and Dustin Hoffman, were being considered for the role. However, it was only when Stallone decided to become involved with the project, as the star and co-writer, that the story was finally brought into production.
The RAMBO film series came to epitomize the masculine aggression of the Reagan era. As one of the most cliché'-ridden action franchises in history, the film became a prototype for shoot-'em-up, one-man-against-the-world action flicks. However, the initial tale of ex-green beret John Rambo is actually a pretty decent story, a taut psychological thriller, carried by a very strong onscreen physical presence of Sylvester Stallone.
The first installment was followed by several sequels, and 2008 saw the premiere of the fourth Rambo adventure, which not only starred, but was also written, directed, and produced by Sylvester Stallone himself, already in his sixties. An that´s not all folks, Stallone plans to shoot at least one more sequel to bid a worthy farewell to one of his signature on-screen personas.
